GEO Roadmap 2026: How to Get Cited by ChatGPT

Being cited as a source in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overview is no longer a matter of luck — it is the result of a systematic optimization process. If you have not yet explored what GEO is and how it differs from SEO, we recommend starting with our GEO fundamentals guide. This roadmap walks you through the steps to target measurable AI visibility within your first 30 days.

Who is this for? Businesses with a website that want to appear in AI search results and can execute technical steps with their own team or an agency.

Phase 1 — Visibility Baseline (Days 1–3)

1

Build Your Target Query List

Document the questions your customers ask AI. List combinations of category + location + intent — such as "recommend a digital agency in Istanbul" or "which companies offer GEO services?" Aim for at least 20 queries.

2

Test Current Visibility

Run each query in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overview. Record results: who gets recommended, which sources are cited, is your brand present? This becomes your baseline measurement.

3

Competitor Analysis

Identify competitors that consistently appear in AI answers. Analyze which content types and page structures they use. This is the starting point of your gap analysis.

Phase 2 — Technical Foundation (Days 4–10)

4

Set Up llms.txt

Add an llms.txt file to your domain root. Contents: company description, services offered, target audience, contact info, and key page list. Writing it in both English and Turkish is recommended.

5

Schema.org Structured Data

Minimum required schemas: Organization, WebSite, Service, FAQPage, Person (for the founder). Add in JSON-LD format to the head section. Consider HowTo or BlogPosting schemas for individual service pages.

6

E-E-A-T Signals

Add a founder or expert biography — real name, title, area of expertise, employing organization. Pair it with Person schema. If LinkedIn or press links exist, add them as sameAs values.

Phase 3 — Content Structure (Days 11–21)

7

Build FAQPage Sections

Add at least 5 question-answer blocks per service page and at least 8 on the homepage. Questions must be written the way users actually ask AI. You can use schema-matched HTML <details> elements.

8

Content Layering

Create 3 content layers per service: (1) definition / what-is page, (2) implementation guide / how-to, (3) case study or comparison. This three-layer structure prepares the ground for AI to cite you across both broad and specific queries. For Perplexity and Google AI Overview adaptations, see our converting content model guide.

9

Entity Consistency

Verify that your company name, founder name, address, and contact information are written identically across all pages, social media profiles, and directories. Inconsistencies lower your trust score with AI models.

Phase 4 — Authority and Measurement (Days 22–30)

10

External References and Citations

Having your brand name and URL appear in industry directories, blog citations, or press releases helps AI models recognize you as a real entity. Mid-authority sector sites are valuable alongside high-authority sources.

11

Day 30 Visibility Measurement

Re-run the query list you tested at the start. Which queries show improvement, which areas are still blank? This cycle should be repeated monthly — GEO is not a static target but an ongoing process.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does implementing the GEO roadmap take?

The technical foundation (llms.txt, schema) can be set up in 1–2 days. Content layering takes 2–3 weeks. First measurable results typically appear in 3–6 weeks.

Can I do this without technical knowledge?

llms.txt and basic meta tags require no technical expertise. Schema.org JSON-LD needs minimal HTML knowledge. Platforms like WordPress, Webflow, and Framer have plugins or built-in features for this.

Which AI models should I target?

ChatGPT (OpenAI), Perplexity AI, Google AI Overview, Claude (Anthropic), and Bing Copilot are the primary targets. Most of these models share overlapping sources (web crawl); a solid technical foundation affects them all.
