What is GEO? Generative Engine Optimization for AI Search Visibility

Umut Şahinkaya · GEO Stratejisti, StrategAI · 5 dk okuma

TL;DR — Quick Summary
  • GEO = making your brand appear as a citation inside AI-generated answers
  • Google AI Overviews is now live in Turkey (May 2026)
  • Organic CTR dropped 38% — AI answers replace blue links
  • First measurable GEO results: 3-6 weeks with correct setup
  • GEO complements SEO — it doesn't replace it

What is GEO?

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of structuring your content, technical signals, and brand authority so that AI models — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Claude, and voice assistants — cite your brand as a recommended source in their generated answers.

Where SEO targets a position in Google's blue-link results, GEO targets the AI-generated answer itself — the paragraph that now appears above (or instead of) those blue links.

Why Now? Google AI Overviews is Live in Turkey

As of May 2026, Google AI Overviews is active for Turkish searches. When someone searches "best dentist in Beşiktaş with gentle touch," Google now shows an AI-generated summary — naming clinics, ratings, and reasons — before a single organic result.

This shift is accelerating. Within 2-3 years, voice assistants on phones will perform searches on behalf of users. "Find me a good accountant nearby" — the assistant queries, gets the answer, and books the appointment. The user never sees a search results page. If your brand isn't in that AI answer, you don't exist.

The 5 Core GEO Signals

1. Question-Answer Content Structure

AI models prefer content that directly answers questions. Each page should open with a clear definition or answer within the first 50 words, followed by structured detail.

2. FAQPage Schema Markup

Structured data tells AI bots how to parse your Q&A content. FAQPage, HowTo, and Article schema are the baseline for GEO readiness.

3. E-E-A-T Signals (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trust)

AI models cite sources they assess as authoritative. Founder biography, verifiable credentials, and third-party mentions (press, directories) all improve citation probability.

4. llms.txt File

The AI-equivalent of robots.txt. This plain-text file tells AI crawlers what your site covers, which pages to prioritize, and your preferred citation format. Takes 30 minutes to set up, immediately improves AI crawler access.

5. Entity Consistency

Your brand name, location, services, and founder details should be consistent across your website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, and all directory listings. Inconsistency confuses AI models and reduces citation probability.

FAQ

Can I do GEO and SEO at the same time?

Yes. Many GEO signals (content quality, technical structure, E-E-A-T) overlap with SEO. Running both simultaneously is the recommended approach — GEO fills the gap where SEO's influence is declining.

Which industries benefit most from GEO?

Any sector where buyers ask AI for recommendations: professional services (law, finance, consulting), healthcare, e-commerce, B2B SaaS, and local businesses. If people ask "who should I hire for X?" or "recommend a product for Y," GEO applies.

What's the difference between GEO and AEO?

AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) and GEO are largely synonymous — different names for the same discipline. Some practitioners use AEO to emphasize voice search optimization specifically. At StrategAI, we use GEO as the umbrella term.

Is content alone enough for GEO?

No. Content quality plus technical signals are both required: schema.org structured data, E-E-A-T signals, internal link architecture, and entity consistency. Content changes alone won't compensate for missing technical signals.
